DON’T GET SCAMMED! What to watch out for when selling/buying a car.
It’s been brought to our attention that there are scammers in the car world trying to get money from other people. Please be very cautious when you get a message, direct message, email or any kind of contact from any website that you’re selling on, even Facebook Marketplace or here on M3List. There’s a lot of sneaky ways people like to try to get your attention with false cashiers checks and fraud. Please always be cautious.
Here at M3List & M3Parts, we want to ensure safety and security of our members. Please keep in mind that before you do any type of deal or agreement, always do your due diligence on the parties involved. As much as we’d like to trust everybody, it’s always good to double check everything.
We’ve do our best here at M3List to make sure that scammers don’t get through our messaging system, but sometimes they do. Typically they send messages that say something along the lines of saying that they will have their “Driver” come pick it up. Sometimes they have a bit of broken English, sometimes they ask strange questions. Just be on the look out for anything suspicious. I would highly recommend a phone call with the buyer before anything moves forward on anything.
- We highly recommend you do deals in person if possible during the day.
- Speak with the buyer or seller over the phone beforehand.
- Always verify funds properly with your trusted bank
- Stay on top of your gut instincts during a sale
- Always ask for additional photos or videos to ensure they have the vehicle. You can always check the EXIF data of the photos/videos to see when they were recorded once they send them to you
- Use a transport company that you know and trust
- Do not give out your personal information until you’ve confirmed the other party is legit
- If you meet in person, it’s always a good idea to try and have footage of the sellers car, license plate, etc IF needed.Â
- Ask for proof of ID or a photo of their drivers license/current registration/copy of title/copy of payoff/copy bank lien so you have it on record.Â
- Do your research on the banks being used to transfer money or cash checks (Make sure they’re real)
- Never be afraid to say no, always go with what you feel is right
- Pay attention to language use and make sure it sounds real (Incorrect use of English words can be overseas scams sometimes)
Please report any fraudulent or scam related conversations. Thank you!
