During a visit to BBS in Germany, our team at IND had the rare opportunity to witness the FI-R EVO’s development process firsthand. The engineers explained how the unique release pocket designs—carefully machined into the spokes—optimize the ratio of weight reduction to structural integrity. Through extensive testing and material analysis, BBS determined the ideal amount of material to remove without compromising strength.
Another key advantage: BBS Motorsport performs critical manufacturing steps in-house, including rim spinning, heat treating, and quenching. These thermal processes realign the grain structure of the aluminum, massively increasing strength compared to untreated alternatives. After forging, each wheel is inspected with a penetrating dye test to identify any metallurgical imperfections, ensuring each wheel is flawless. Once complete, wheels are tested at BBS’s primary facility—located just 20 minutes away. There, advanced testing rigs simulate extreme road and track loads, verifying fatigue resistance across thousands of cycles, with and without mounted tires.
