Originally intended as a one-off component, the response from enthusiasts was overwhelming, so we made this upgrade available as a complete, ready-to-install package.
A Heritage Rooted in Racing
Porsche introduced wooden shift knobs in the 1970s on lightweight race cars such as the 908 and 917. Wood was chosen for weight savings and a natural tactile feel. The wooden knob remains an iconic design element carried into modern legends like the Carrera GT, which featured a beech wood knob from the factory. As long-time Porsche fans, we knew the wooden knob was the perfect touch for our G87 M2 build.
Precision Engineering by IND
The original Porsche 917 knob uses M8-1.25 threads, while the BMW G8X platform uses a press-fit design. To bridge this gap, IND engineers a custom aluminum sleeve that is CNC machined and ceramic coated in black for durability. The Porsche knob threads directly into the sleeve for a secure, OEM-quality connection with a seamless aesthetic.
Installation Options
Installation requires a threaded shift lever. Customers can choose from:
- Modified factory BMW shift lever (threaded)
- Modified Rogue Engineering OCTANE Short Shift Kit (threaded)
Once installed, the threaded shaft allows the Porsche 917 Style knob to integrate cleanly with your G8X interior, bringing the tactile feel and timeless visual appeal of vintage racing to a modern BMW cockpit.
