So, this is a fully manual, hard top, e46 M3 coupĂ© with 160,200 miles (which may increase slightly). It’s mechanically sound, with a clean and clear title, and has just passed inspection. We’re moving to San Francisco, so it’s no longer a feasible weekend indulgence without a place to work on it. I’ve never tracked it and I’ve driven it (mostly) responsibly. It’s been professionally converted to a three-pedal manual by a BMW specialist mechanic in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The tires are newish, with plenty of tread left on them and there’s been a oil change back in May. I’ve serviced everything religiously.

The interior could use some work because this is North Carolina and BMW’s adhesives just can’t handle the climate. There’s some cracking in the driver’s seat and the C-pillar upholstery is looking a little disheveled. I think the sunshade has come off its track (but the skylight’s still all good). I also don’t think the front fender is genuine. There are a few scratches, road rash and a dent in the driver’s side door that’s not too noticeable. I have another door for you without a dent, but…it’s blue so you’ll have to have it repainted.

However, and this is very true, this M3 is mechanically in great shape. The Vanos is in good shape with no whine or rattle. There are no leaks whatsoever.

Most importantly:
+ A documented dealership rod-bearing service has been completed early on in its life
+ Subframe reinforcement was carried out professionally by a specialist BMW mechanic in Charlotte.

Cooling system is good to go for at least another 20K miles (but I’d do it sooner rather than later). Probably you’d be good to change the differential fluid and the manual transmission fluid. Brake lines probably need a flush, too. The a/c is making a small whine, but it still blows cold. I’m thinking it needs just a splash of refrigerant. One of the post-cat oxygen sensors is on the fritz and throws a code now and again, but I’ll give you a Bosch OEM equivalent to stop that annoyance. There are also some supplies and fluids that I’ll gift you upon purchase. I did all the service, but it’s hard to do a lot of the stuff I’d like to do without a lift.

All in all, this is a great project car that isn’t too challenging to restore or just keep going for many more years. It’s amazing to drive, and still has that tight, precise feel that you get in these older BMWs. Give the mechanical complexity of this 21-year-old car, this is in pretty good shape where it matters, and it’s definitely something I’d check out if you’re in the market for one. I respected this while I had it and only drove it on the weekends.
